We are excited to offer two trips for students this March! We will be taking students to Memphis, TN and the Alabama Gulf Coast. These trips will provide an all-inclusive experience for students while providing education on issues such as literacy, poverty, culture, hunger, homelessness, and the environment.
This spring break, we are traveling for Care with a Conscience: Neighborhood and Urban Development in Memphis, TN from March 8–15. We will be working with Serve901 in the city of Memphis. It will be a great opportunity to work alongside a wonderful community partner to focus on issues such as food insecurity, homelessness, and education inequality. We will learn more about how Memphis is affected by these issues, and what efforts are being made to combat them. We’ll also be doing some fun outings within the city to get to learn more about its history and what makes the city of Memphis unique!
The all-inclusive cost to participate is $620 including ground transportation, a Serve901 city guide, supplies, lodging, meals and snacks, tickets to the National Civil Rights Museum, tickets to a Memphis Grizzlies game, and a Serve901 T-Shirt. Upon acceptance to this trip, a non-refundable deposit of $45 will be due by Feb. 17. We do not want cost to be a barrier so keep in mind that there are payment plans and travel grants available.
We will stay at the St. George’s Bunkhouse! Breakfast and lunch will be provided by Serve901, as well as three evening meals where our Serve901 city guide will educate us on Memphis, Civil Rights, and hear stories about our service experiences. We will also use the St. George’s Bunkhouse kitchen to cook two evening meals together! We will also eat out a local restaurant one evening.
We will be visiting the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel as part of a series of cultural excursions that explore the history (Civil Rights Museum and Lorraine motel), present (Grizzlies), and future (City Leadership) of Memphis.
At the National Civil Rights Museum, students will have an opportunity to reflect on big questions about the human experience and how history relates to contemporary events and everyday life. Exhibits will encourage character development by exploring and critiquing historical examples of courage and relating them to students’ lives.
We will also attend a Memphis Grizzlies games against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, March 14. We will take this opportunity to learn about the economic and cultural impact of the team on the city of Memphis. We will look at the philanthropic work of the Grizzlies foundation and how that can be translated to local communities.
Students should bring all bedding for a twin bed (pillow, sheets, blankets, sleeping bag), towel, work clothes, play clothes, toiletries, water bottle, and spending money for souvenirs.
