This spring break, we are traveling for Care with a Conscience: Neighborhood and Urban Development in Memphis, TN from March 8–15. We will be working with Serve901 in the city of Memphis. It will be a great opportunity to work alongside a wonderful community partner to focus on issues such as food insecurity, homelessness, and education inequality. We will learn more about how Memphis is affected by these issues, and what efforts are being made to combat them. We’ll also be doing some fun outings within the city to get to learn more about its history and what makes the city of Memphis unique! Please consider joining us!
We partner with a variety of organizations that focus on youth and community development, food insecurity, education equity, criminal justice reform, refugee resettlement, homelessness, poverty alleviation and more. Opportunities are based on the needs & desires of our partners! Check out what a trip could look like here on our sample schedule.
We hope that you engage your hands, head, and heart while learning to care more deeply for others and place. In the process, you are serving our non-profit partners while falling in love with Memphis. Your trip has such a profound effect on your life that you engage in your communities afterward as an active citizen. Maybe for some, you learn about an internship in Memphis that could bring you back to Memphis one day.
The all-inclusive cost to participate is $590 including ground transportation, a Serve901 city guide, supplies, lodging, meals and snacks, tickets to the National Civil Rights Museum, and a Serve901 T-Shirt. Upon acceptance to this trip, a non-refundable deposit of $45 will be due by January 17. We do not want cost to be a barrier so keep in mind that there are payment plans and potential scholarships available.
We will stay at the St. George’s Bunkhouse! Breakfast and lunch will be provided by Serve901, as well as three evening meals where our Serve901 city guide will educate us on Memphis, Civil Rights, and hear stories about our service experiences. We will also use the St. George’s Bunkhouse kitchen to cook two evening meals together! We will also eat out a local restaurant one evening.
Students should bring all bedding for a twin bed (pillow, sheets, blankets, sleeping bag), towel, work clothes, play clothes, gloves, toiletries, snacks, water bottle, spending money for souvenirs.
We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have, so don’t hesitate to reach out! You may get in touch with the Beyond Bama team at beyondbama@sa.ua.edu. The application is linked below!
