Beyond Bama: Alternative Breaks organizes trips for the UA students during university breaks. When students participate in Beyond Bama, they get the chance to travel to communities domestically and abroad as they engage in service and experiential learning.

These short-term service trips provide an all-inclusive experience for students while providing education on issues such as literacy, poverty, culture, hunger, homelessness, and the environment.

Upcoming Trips

We are beyond excited to announce that our Spring Break trip application is open! This spring break, we are traveling to Memphis, TN from March 8–15. We will be working with Serve 901 in the city of Memphis. It will be a great opportunity to work alongside a wonderful community partner to focus on issues such as food insecurity, homelessness, and education inequality. We will learn more about how Memphis is affected by these issues, and what efforts are being made to combat them. We’ll also be doing some fun outings within the city to get to learn more about its history and what makes the city of Memphis unique! Check out our Trip Participants page for more information!

Student Team Leaders

Beyond Bama is a team within the Center for Service and Leadership focusing on organizing effective, sustainable, and ethical alternative break service trips both domestically and abroad. We firmly believe that engaged leadership and meaningful service equals measurable change, and we want you to be a part of that journey! Student Team Leaders would collaborate with a community partner, plan, recruit, and organize trips, as well as facilitate interactions on the trips. Apply to become a team leader today!

Beyond Bama Learning Partners

While student trip leaders plan, organize, and lead the trip, chaperones (or what we like to call Learning Partners) are responsible for facilitating positive discussion, holding receipts, and calling the appropriate contacts in the case of an emergency. This role offers a great opportunity to serve while learning about issues faced by other communities and connecting with students outside of the classroom. Beyond Bama welcomes all applications from UA employees, and these trips are free for Learning Partners. We would love for you to join us on a trip in spring 2025! Fill out our Learning Partner Interest Form, or check out our Learning Partners page for more information.
